NANCY CASSIDY, a singer / songwriter / PTA President / mother-of-two-boys / Wife-to-one-husband / overextended modern woman has received a gold record from the Recording Industry Association of America Inc. The award recognizes the sale of 500,000 copies of her 1986 recording KidsSongs. It is also the winner of an award for Design Excellence from Bookbuilders West.

The cassette was first released by Palo Alto-based children's publishing company, Klutz Press. Spokesperson Sheila Wolfson tried to put the achievement into perspective:

"KidsSongs receives more recognition, more out-of-the-blue raves and crayon-drawn endorsements than most anything else we do. The quality of her recordings has given her a nationwide reputation."

There are 25 children's albums listed in the 1990 directory of gold records, nearly all of them Disney productions. (We need to check the current directory for # of albums.) How did Nancy Cassidy's children's
music break into this kind of company?

"She knows her audience," explained Wolfson. In fact, she puts her audience to bed every night and drives them to school every morning. I'm not sure Disney goes to those extremes."

Cynthia Gerdes, owner of Creative Kidstuff in Minneapolis, MN, agrees that Nancy has emerged as one of the top recording stars in the phenomenon. "KidsSongs is consistently in our store's Top Ten. Speaking personally, my eight-year-old loved the lyrics, memorized and sang them all . . . over and over!"

The 48 minute cassette delivers. Its 22 songs range from a beautiful arrangement of some classics (you won't believe what a wonderful tune has been hiding in "Twinkle Twinkle" all these years), to a get-up-on-your-chair treatment of "This Little Light of Mine," to a honky-tonk about the dangers of being sat upon by large pachyderms in "Willoughby Wallowby Woo, An
Elephant Sat on You."

Ken Whiteley, who has produced, performed or written much of the most innovative and popular children's music of the last 25 years was the producer.

"We tried to blend a lot of things together in our music: a little calypso, jug band, a couple of lullabies, even a little rock and roll when we could get away with it. We were trying to make Kid's Music that sounded like the
teacher was out of the room."

They did. It does. And with 500,000 copies sold, the results have obviously struck a young chord.
